Gout Medication To Ease The
Pain
Gout is a devastating form
of arthritis. It is caused by an excess of uric acid that is
not properly filtered out of the body. The excess uric deposits
itself into your joints, where it then crystallizes. These
crystals will do two things. First of all, they will cause
sharp pain in your muscles when you move them. This is because
as you move your muscles they will rub against the
crystals.
Secondly, these crystals prevent proper flowing of
circulation to the joints which will then cause swelling and
redness to occur. One of the best ways to handle these crystals
is with gout medication. In this article I will give you a
guide on some of the most common medications used to treat
gout.
First, let's start with temporary gout medication that you
can use yourself to help you reduce the pains until you can see
a doctor. These involve over-the-counter medications such as
ibuprofen which is good in reducing pain in the short term.
However, for a better solution you would want to use
prescription drugs that your doctor has given to you after the
diagnosis has been confirmed. These are typically nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDS. Currently, the gout
medication of choice is indomethacin.
Indomethacin is used to reduce pain, stiffness and swelling
in the joints as well as any fever the person suffering from
gout might have. It is used for many different forms of
arthritis.
In addition, glucoroticoids may be administered to the
patient. These are steroid hormones that can be ingested
orally, or administered through a joint injection directly into
the area that is inflicted with gout.
Previously, colchicine was the most commonly prescribed gout
medication when suffering from acute attacks of gout. Usually,
this drug is taken within the first few hours of the attack and
will act to stop the pain within two days. However, there have
been many side effects that are found with this drug, chief
among them is diarrhea and nausea.
For prevention, other medications are used such as
allopurinol, febuxostat, probencid and even baking soda.
In conclusion, there are variety of different gout
medications for someone who is suffering from gout. Of course,
they depend upon the situation, the person, and the kind of
gout attacks they are suffering from. Use this information as
it applies your situation and seek out the proper channels to
get the right medication for your particular needs.
